Stop 1: Outside the Barracks

Examine the building's appearance, materials and architecture.

Question

Why do you think the building has so many windows?

Answer

The windows allowed natural sunlight and fresh air into the building. This was especially important because many convicts lived and slept together inside.

Stop 2: Convict Sleeping Quarters

Explore the crowded sleeping arrangements and daily lives of convicts.

Question

How is this different from your bedroom?

Answer

Convicts slept in hammocks in large shared rooms with many other people. Unlike most bedrooms today, they had very little privacy, personal space or comfort.

Stop 3: Historical Artefacts

Investigate objects that reveal clues about the people who lived there.

Question

What can these objects tell us about the past?

Answer

Historical objects can help us understand how people lived, worked and spent their time. For example, an old button or piece of clothing can tell us about what uniforms/attire people wore and the materials they used to work.
